The picture entitled “Hearts” has won the first prize of the “El•lipse Photography Competition”. Phil Sanders, from the Isalan laboratory at CRG, is the author, who wins a helicopter flight for two people above Barcelona. He explains that “although it looks like a little heart, it is in fact a human embryonic kidney cell. The cell is coexpressing HcRed fluorescent protein and a chimeric transmembrane protein containing GFP within the intracellular domain.”

In the last meeting of the editorial committee of El.lipse on June 9 with representatives from every centre, all the received pictures were evaluated and the best picture was voted for. The result was as follows: First prize: Phil Sanders, CRG and finalists: Cristina Morera Albert (CMRB) and Medya Shikhagaie (CEXS-UPF).

This first edition of the competition tried to narrow the gap between science and society through art and rewards the best scientific image. The theme of the works, and the technical characteristics of the image were open to any field of research and the imagination of the PRBB residents. The only condition was that images must be taken from the laboratories or facilities at PRBB.


Phil Sanders, del CRG, és el guanyador del "Concurs Foto El·lipse"

La fotografia titulada “Hearts’ ha guanyat el primer premi del “Concurs Foto El•lipse”. Phil Sanders, del laboratori de Mark Isalan del CRG, és l’autor de la foto i guanyarà un viatge en helicòpter sobre Barcelona per a dues persones. Sanders explica que “encara que sembli un petit cor, en realitat és una cèl•lula embrionària humana del ronyó. La cèl•lula està coexpressant la proteïna fluorescent HcRed i proteïna transmembrana quimèrica que conté GFP en el domini intracel•lular”.

El passat 9 de juny, durant l’última trobada del Comitè Editorial de l’El•lipse, es van avaluar i votar totes les fotos rebudes al concurs. El resultat va ser el següent: Primer premi: Phil Sanders (CRG) i finalistes: Cristina Morera Albert (CMRB) i Medya Shikhagaie (CEXS-UPF).

La primera edició d’aquest concurs ha tractat d’apropar la ciència a la societat a través de l’art premiant la millor imatge científica. La temàtica dels treballs i les característiques tècniques de les fotografies estaven obertes a qualsevol àmbit de recerca i a la imaginació dels residents del PRBB. L’única condició és que les imatges s’havien d’obtenir en algun dels laboratoris o instal•lacions del PRBB.
